1The first step of any search engine optimisation campaign is keyword research. If you want to be found on the first page of Google for a number of key phrases, you need to know which key phrases are right for your website. It is important to know which keyword phrases people are actually using to search for the products and services you offer.

We can help you to find the right keywords for your website and then you can you track your progress. Some keywords can be generic and to rank for, it’s a good idea to spread your bets and chose a few dozen keywords and spread them across your website in the right places. With the right blend of short tail (popular), long tail (more specific) and geographic keywords you can reach the people who are looking for what you do and that’s where we can help!

The aim is to find keywords that are relevant to your business. Some keywords are harder to rank highly for than others, however if they have lots of global and local monthly searches and you have the right content and SEO practices in place we can help you rise up the rankings.

We talk you through which keywords to use and on which pages so you are in the loop throughout the whole process. We will consult you to make sure you have an understanding of how keyword research and search engine optimisation works and then we implement the work for you!

Top Level Keyword Research

We will undertake top level keyword research before we begin any SEO project. We need to know that the keywords we are looking to get ranked are realistic targets.

Deep Level Keyword Research

Deep level keyword research involves an extensive search on relevant keywords associated with your target market. We will present a list of the most relevant broad and longtail keywords and phrases and will rank the keywords in terms of opportunity. The ranking system is calculated using a comparison formula between the search volumes and number of pages in competition. The number of keywords identified normally totals 300+.

We strongly recommend deep level keyword research unless you are already sure of your target keywords. We often discover keyword gems whilst doing the research which allow us to get page one ranking for keywords with high traffic volumes. The reason they are gems is because they have relatively high traffic volumes for the number of pages in competition. We always refer back to the keyword research as we progress with the SEO project and find it helps the client understand the objectives of the project.

The long-tail and keyword groups

Targeting one keyword is counter-intuitive. It leaves you open to fluctuations in Google’s algorithm, and gives you too narrow a focus. A keyword group allows you to take advantage of many more lower-volume, yet more targeted keywords.

To build a keyword group, we understand the ‘core’ search terms that people use most, and we start to build around that core search term. For example, if your core search term is ‘coaching’, we would build around that word: ‘coaching services’, ‘executive coaching‘ and then further, adding phrases to make terms such as ‘coaching services for small businesses’. These long, infrequently used phrases, often convert much better than generic phrases – commonly known as ‘long tail’.

We then take the keyword group, and shape a content strategy designed to maximise the number of long-tail searches you receive. This approach means that one piece of content can be optimised for many different keywords.
